Pheasant Season South Dakota!

This year pheasant season in South Dakota opens the earliest it can.  The season opener is always the third weekend in October but with October 1, 2016 being on a Saturday that makes the third weekend start on the 15th this year!  Of course if you live in the great state of South Dakota you can hunt public land the weekend prior making it an even earlier start as a Resident Start Date.

Warm weather hunting can be fun and challenging for both hunters and dogs.  Here are some helpful tips:

  • Make sure you dress in layers, you might start out with a little chill but as you walk that field or tree line you might start to sweat.  I have light jacket that the sides zip down allowing me to cool off.
  • Always stay hydrated, drink plenty of water.  Don't forget a jug and a bowl for the dogs hydration

  • If you are trying out new hunting boots, break them in by going for a few walks prior to taking them into the field.
  • If you have not been walking or exercising since last pheasant season, you might want to start.  Shedding a few pounds and strengthening some neglected muscles will help you on those long days.  It also is nice when your hunting clothes didn't "shrink" in the off-season.
  • It is better to hunt in groups. There is success in numbers and you can watch out for one-another.  Of course wear the required blaze orange to be able to see each other.

If you have any other tips please share them in the comments below.  I wish everyone a safe and successful hunt this up-coming season!
